The challenges are real and complex. However, failure to act will result in a permanent underclass in both rural and urban communities. Failure will also result in continued and unnecessary distractions in our political discourse, deepening cultural divisions that sew seeds of anger and resentment, and less Americans believing in the promise of opportunity for all – as long as you’re willing to work for it. I come from an entrepreneurial family where individuals overcame, for example, Jim Crow to build successful businesses and professional lives. That spirit of hard work is in my DNA. However, without pathways for success, the next generation of workers will not be prepared to succeed in our rapidly changing 21st century economy!
